Owl Spirit Award

This year, the inaugural Owl Spirit Award will honor up to three outstanding volunteers whose service has made a meaningful impact on the Rice community. The award recognizes individuals who embody the spirit of service, generously sharing their time, expertise and talents to make Rice stronger.

We invite you to nominate an Owl whose dedication, generosity and commitment to Rice go above and beyond.

Eligibility
  • Individuals who have volunteered with a Rice University program, department or initiative within the past two academic or fiscal years.
  • No minimum number of volunteer hours is required, but sustained and consistent engagement is encouraged.
  • Nominees may include alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends of Rice. Faculty and staff nominations must highlight contributions made beyond their official roles and responsibilities. Self-nominations are welcome.

Criteria
  • Demonstrates measurable impact through volunteer contributions, shown through reach, project scope, program improvements, testimonials, data or specific outcomes.
  • Demonstrates sustained, reliable engagement over time, consistently showing up, following through and contributing across multiple volunteer opportunities.
  • Builds strong, positive relationships with volunteers, staff and constituents; fosters a collaborative, welcoming community; mentors peers and strengthens the culture of volunteerism at Rice.
  • Reflects Rice University's core values — Responsibility, Integrity, Community and Excellence — through their volunteer service. Learn more about Rice’s values.
