A Message From Rice President Reginald DesRoches
Dear Rice Volunteers,
During this season of gratitude, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for your dedicated volunteer service. Over the years, I have had the privilege of connecting with so many individuals who generously contribute their time and talents to support our mission. I am continually inspired by your dedication, the care you show for our community and the passion you bring to everything you do.
Whether you are volunteering for an alumni group, hosting events in your region, interviewing students or serving as an ambassador for a specific initiative or program, you are moving the university forward. With the recent launch of our 10-year strategic plan, Momentous, your continued volunteer efforts are all the more important to reaching our goals as an institution and a community.
Thank you once more for your dedication and for all the ways you strengthen our community.
With Gratitude,
Reginald DesRoches
President
The Joy of Volunteering
Learn about three Owls who have generously shared their time and talents with Rice — and what they enjoy most about volunteering.
Ted Adams ’86
Ted Adams, a Washington, D.C. Owl, is committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of students and alumni alike. Serving on the Association of Rice Alumni Board and the Rice Engineering Alumni Board, he is passionate about giving back to his alma mater and leverages his business and alumni networks to create mentorship opportunities for students. He also enjoys organizing regional alumni events that bring Owls of all ages and majors together to celebrate their shared experiences.
Anne Chao ’05, ’09
Anne Chao has many connections to Rice — Rice parent, alumna, advisory board member, lecturer and Lovett College associate — and that’s just for starters. Every role she takes has a story, from her efforts to establish Rice’s Houston Asian American Archive, to her longtime involvement with the Center for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality, to her support of the arts through the Shepherd School of Music and Moody Center for the Arts.
Jim Pyke ’97
Jim Pyke’s journey with Rice University began as an active undergraduate, studying engineering, playing ultimate frisbee, working behind the scenes in theater and serving as an O-Week advisor. As past president of the REA Board, he helped create the Summer Engineering Experience (SEE) to help students transition into the working world through internships, alumni mentorships and relationship-building.
