In what roles have you volunteered for Rice?
Jones School class ambassador, London Owls alumni group
Why do you volunteer for Rice?
My time at Rice was very special. I made many lifelong friends while attending, and it strongly influenced the way I think today. I want to give back as much as Rice has given me. It is also because I enjoy it! Rice has a diverse population of students, faculty, and alumni who have fascinating stories of their life experiences and learnings. It also helps me keep up with all of the exciting changes at the university.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Rice?
Meeting new people and hearing their stories. Everyone has a story! It is good to hear differing opinions and perspectives, and I learn something new from almost every interaction. It also enhances my communication skills and my personal network. When I moved to London at the beginning of this year, I didn't know many people outside of work, but I quickly made new friends through the Rice alumni group. Added bonus: by organizing events, I am finding great places in the city!
What's a fun Rice fact about you?
I was an honorary captain on the field when the Rice football team played in the Liberty Bowl a few years ago. While we didn't win the game, it was an amazing experience! When I looked up in the stands from the field, I was proud to see all of the blue shirts.
Why should others volunteer for Rice?
It is good for you! Studies have shown that people who volunteer are happier, more self-confident and have reduced stress levels. It also improves your communication skills, expands your personal network and increases your knowledge. Support your school! Aren't you proud of your connection with Rice? Why wouldn't you want to make sure that it continues to be one of the best schools in the world? People make the difference...you can make a difference.
